Startin’ Sumthin’

It’s been about 9 months and I’ve been home as a result of being laid off back in July. I really liked that job too. It’s been good and bad; I get to spend time with my kids who are 3 years old and 8 months old, but the idea of not bringing in a significant income is unsettling to me. Not being able to say, without a doubt, that you can take care of your responsibilities ranks high on the shit scale. Its even more intense when kids are involved because they deserve the world and they’re counting on you to deliver. That generates a lot of anxiety and worry for me.

What I’ve learned though is that worry, or rather fear, is as much a part of me as my beating heart and the blood which flows through my veins. One has to learn to face fear; stare it down whenever it rears it’s ugly head or otherwise be consumed by it. Fear is a fixture in our lives exacerbated by our insecurities. For lot of folks these days and myself for that matter, it’s the slump in the economy that makes us anxious and beads sweat on the brow.

Right now my wife brings in the major portion of the income – a difficult thing for a man, but my ego won’t help the cause. It’s a new day in America. Traditional roles between men and women have been changing for a long time, but it feels like change is happening a lot faster. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that for men who are in their prime working years (ages 25-54), 1 in 6 are unemployed. They cite not being able to keep up with the rapid growth of technology and the effects of globalization among other things. I guess I am to be counted in this lot, but I’m blessed to have a background in technology. It isn’t hard to see why people in the US aren’t ready for these challenges. If you would have told me 10 years ago that new careers will be built by people sending crafty 140 character messages I would have laughed in your face.

I’m enjoying my time away from the grind, but I know I have to find firm footing and begin building again. With all this time on my hands its easy to get distracted so I’ve made a pledge to achieve for myself what I’ve helped others achieve. It starts here with this blog, Well-Learned. Largely, its about the things I have an interest in learning more about. Hopefully this will happen with those who read the blog, share similar interests or disagree entirely, but have the wherewithal to explain their position and actually influence the conversation.

We are all bombarded with lots of information in todays world, so-much-so that we rarely get to process all the information in order to get to the heart of matters. It becomes difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. One need only open their email inbox to find it inundated with useless information. When we do manage to click that link and follow the rabbit down that winding and twisted hole we emerge on the other side only to find that no one is even paying attention to the topic anymore.

This blog is my continuing education platform, if you will. I hope to find and make connections with people who can advance my understanding of a particular subject and I will do my best to do the same. We are living in a time where information is a mouse click away. The savvy and the passionate among us take full advantage while others are either slow to start or never get going at all. I’ve always been curious and now I see my children navigate their worlds with even more curiosity and it makes me smile; It makes me want to be better.

Join me on this journey.
